Today might not be the best day to write a blog about gardening since it just snowed 5 inches, but here at Newton Center Chiropractic we are all about prevention and staying ahead of the curve. So since spring will arrive at some point and March starts tomorrow, here are a few tips on how to keep your body healthy from planting to harvest.

1) Posture/Positioning

If you want to keep your back healthy, you have to know what it's doing, right? Whether you're lifting, putting something down, pushing the wheelbarrow, digging, or weed pulling, make sure your back is in a healthy, neutral position. Lifting should be done with your hips, not your back. You'll want to get good at hip hinging, and if you don't know what that is then check out our shoveling blog. You're bound to end up in funny positions when doing gardening and yard work, so make sure you keep a proverbial eye on what your back is doing to avoid hurting yourself.

2) Train the movement and positions you need

If you are going to be on your hands and knees a lot, make sure you're comfortable on your hands and knees! Exercises like the bird dog along with stretches like child's pose and cat cow will make sure your body is stable, mobile, and comfortable while on your hands and knees. If you're going to be lifting a lot, make sure you can hip hinge, squat, and lunge. Not sure what you need? That brings me to #3

3) Come get evaluated

Being proactive is the best way to prevent injury. It can be hard to know what you need to strengthen, what you need to stretch, and how good your lifting/exercise form is on your own. That's what we're here for. We can give you advice, tweak your mechanics, and give you exercises, drills, and more personalized tips to keep your body healthy.

So have fun, get your hands dirty, and remember: Life's a garden. Dig it (but dig it in a smart way that won't hurt your back)

Bonus 4) Check out our youtube page if you forget what we talked about in the office. There are playlists of stretches and exercises grouped by body part so if we tell you how to do something and you can't remember because Dr. Drew talked too much (it happens), you can get a refresher online whenever you want. There isn't every exercise in the world on there, but there are a whole lot of the common ones we give people. Let me know if there's something you want/need to see on there!
