Lower Back Pain
Causes of Lower Back Pain
Lower back pain can come from many different injuries, including:
- Muscle Strain: The muscles and tendons that support the spine can become strained, both from overuse, lack of use leading to atrophy, poor lifting mechanics, or poor ergonomics
- Herniated Discs: Discs are made of tough layers of connective tissue, called the anulus fibrosis, surrounding a softer, gel like substance called the nucleus. Disc pain can be both from tearing of the anulus or from the nucleus protruding from tears in the anulus and compressing a spinal nerve
- Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
- Facet Joint Injury: Repeated hyperextension of the spine or poor control of the pelvis can lead to excessive stress on the facet joints of the lumbar spine, which are the joints behind the spinal canal that determine which directions the spine can bend at that level
- Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Sprain: SI joint pain is common in people who sit a lot for work and also for pregnant women
- Arthritis: Osteoarthritis and other forms of arthritis can be drivers of pain and inflammation in the spine
Lifestyle factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, poor posture, and smoking can also contribute to the development of lower back pain.
The Role of Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care offers a non-invasive and holistic approach to treating lower back pain. Our chiropractors specialize in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, especially those affecting the spine. Spinal adjustments, corrective exercise, ergonomic optimizing, and good posture control can help to mobilize and stabilize the spine, alleviate pressure on nerves, and reduce inflammation in the affected area.
Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment
Many patients find relief from lower back pain with chiropractic care. We aim to improve mobility, reduce pain intensity, and improve balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination. This approach not only targets symptoms but also addresses the root cause of the pain while speeding up healing and preventing injuries from reoccurring.
