What Exactly Is Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is the thickest and longest nerve in the body. It runs from the lower spine all the way down the back of the leg. When compressed, sensation may be felt anywhere along the path of the nerve: low back, buttocks, thighs,back of the legs, calves or even feet. Sciatica may be felt as pain, weakness or numbness.
How Do You Get Sciatica?
Anything that compresses the sciatic nerve can give you sciatica. Some examples include a sedentary lifestyle, a long period of sitting such as during travel, inactivity or tight muscles. Sciatica may also be the result of some kind of trauma to your back like a serious fall or an auto accident. In general, sciatica is not common in people under age 20 unless they have had an accident.
What Can a Chiropractor Do For This?
The chiropractic adjustment will align the bones of the spine, which therefore affects the muscles that attach to the bones and thus the nerves that come off the spinal cord, through the sides of the spine. This includes the sciatic nerve. Adjustments may be done by hand or through tools such as an Activator or a specialized adjusting table.
Each adjustment is customized to every individual. Therefore, depending on your specific spinal misalignment, the adjustment will be catered to you. It may require several adjustments for the body to “hold” the new alignment. This is similar to going to the gym and needing a few sessions to really feel the change in your body.
