Jaw Pain and TMJ

TMJ

What Is TMJ?

TMJ is short for Temporomandibular Joint, which is the joint between your jaw bone and your skull. TMJ Dysfunction or improper motion of the jaw can cause pain, with clicking, difficulty chewing, even creating headaches or ear pain.

What Causes TMJ Dysfunction?

Causes can include trauma, like an airbag to the chin or a fall, or it may be due to something less obvious, like holding your mouth open for dental work or braces. Often, TMJ function can be aggravated by clenching or grinding the teeth,  or even by very hard or chewy foods that challenge the jaw. Many people have TMJ aggravation during stressful periods, like when moving to a new home or losing a job. The muscles surrounding the jaw play an important role in proper function, and imbalances in muscle tone due to clenching or resting jaw position can cause TMJ problems.
